Former PM Berisha – We will force Rama to stand down

Tirana, Albania | Tirana Echo – Former Albanian Prime Minister and spiritual leader of the Democratic Party Sali Berisha has said that the DP will force Rama to accept a technical government while hints an invitation for junior coalition partner LSI.

Berisha speaking for the first time since the start of the protest, said this was a “critical moment for the nation and there could not be elections with Edi Rama as PM. If Rama doesn’t accept, the DP will force him”.

In what is being interpreted as a message for Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI) chairman Ilir Meta who is currently sharing power with Rama’s socialists, Berisha hinted that the LSI is welcomed to join as long as they leave the current coalition.

“Political parties will decide the shape of the technical government and who leads it. Everyone is welcomed to contribute for a technical government” – said Berisha while sitting down with protesters at Tirana’s main boulevard.

6 years ago, Former Prime Minister Berisha was sitting at the same office from where Rama today leads Albania’s affairs and is allegedly linked to the order which led to the killing of 4 protesters, at the same spot where the DP tent stands today.

Although since his resignation from the party chairmanship, Berisha remains one of the most vocal MPs in Parliament while he is said to direct all business at the democratic party which he founded 26 years ago. Left leaning analysts regard him as a highly influential, authoritative and corrupt leader, while right wing supporters regard him as the spiritual ‘guru’ of the democrats and the only one capable to keep the party together.
