Who is threatening Lulzim Basha’s life? This is the question asked by an important media outlet in ALbania yesterday, referring to Basha’s escort being reinforced with extra guards, even from a private police.
Basha did not comment on the news, but this morning, quite unexpectedly, measures from the Guard of the Republic had been increased to cover Basha’s physical security, at home but also during his moves. Opinion.al has attempted to find out for several days on the mystery of such news, according to a chronology which has surprised us.
Monday evening, a trusted source from a neighboring country told Opinion.al that in recent days specialized security services had been informed that an assassination attack was being planned against Albania’s opposition leader to eliminate him physically.
According to the same source, the assassination aimed destabilizing Albania’s political scene and most probably the coup was planned elsewhere abroad. We learned through our confidential sources that the information was indeed true and had arrived in Albania in a very strange and distant way.
But in contrast from other cases in the past, there were concrete names who had been contacted to arrange the assassination, in fact two rival groups had been contacted. The real names of the persons contacted are included in the official information said an undisclosed source.
The most outspoken and dangerous person is a man of criminal records, paid killer who lives abroad, known to Albanian authorities for a previous attempt to kill another important politician of the time in 2011. According to our sources, the information has been officially sent to Albanian security services.
We asked other official sources and one of them from the President’s office said such information is currently being handled by security services in the country. Two days ago, the head of Albania’s secret service SHISH had an emergency meeting with the President of the Republic and Opinion.al has been informed that he has also met with Interior Minister Xhafaj and PM Rama afterwords.
Immediately after the meeting, Mr. Basha was placed under strict security measures while specialized services are investigating the authenticity of the information. The same source told us the this matter has also been referred to partner secret services outside of Albania who are looking at this matter very seriously.
No doubt the matter is serious and should be treated with maximum responsibility. But at the same time, its political use would be unacceptable for such a delicate matter.
It is not certain who stands behind such plans and whether this was actually planned or if it were just an idea, but it goes without saying that any country or other foreign service interested to destabilize Albania at this delicate political moment, would be interested for such a plan.
