Man arrested over €3,2m bank robbery in Albania

Tirana, Albania | Tirana Echo –  A man from southern town of Lushnja has been arrested by the Albanian Police accused of collaborating in the spectacular robbery of €3,2m euros from a security van transporting money from Tirana to the International Airport of Albania.

Internal sources from the police say that they have enough evidence to link the person to the robbery while he is being held in Tirana in total isolation in order to preserve the ongoing sensitive investigation.

The news was confirmed by his lawyer who has complained that from the moment of arrest he has not being allowed to see his client.

The individual arrested has been seen from CCTV footage to have been present in the Tirana Airport area where the robbery took place, before and after the ambush of the security vehicle, together with his brother. One of them is alleged to work for a private security company.

Yesterday, Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri appealed to people on TV that they ‘should be patient’ and give the police time to solve the issue and arrest the culprits, promising that the investigation is moving forward fast.

Last week the Albanian Bank Society had accused the State Police for failing to guarantee security during the transport of a huge sum of money belonging to the Turkish owned BKT bank, spectacularly robbed last Friday on the Tirana Airport road. Later on, the alleged €2,7 had gone up to €3,2m Euros, making it the fourth large bank robbery in 24 months in Albania
