Montenegrins are going through a tense election night as 20 arrested Serbs are suspected of planning armed attack after the vote and Interior Minister tells people to stay indoors after the results are announced.
Earlier today Montenegrin Police Chief Slavko Stojanovic confirmed that 20 people coming from Serbia suspected of planning armed attacks after the parliamentary vote had been arrested and charged with “forming a criminal organization and terrorism”.
Later one, the Special State Prosecutor said through a statement the group “formed a criminal organization” earlier this month with an aim to “influence the legal and executive authorities in Montenegro” and its members were also planning the capture of Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic.
According to Prosecutor’s report, the group is suspected of planning an armed attack on citizens who would gather outside the Montenegrin assembly building and the police after Sunday’s vote, before taking control of the parliament and declaring the victory of “certain political parties.”
Unconfirmed reports are coming in that a former Serbian special police chief suspended because of his links to criminal activities, named as Gen. Bratislav Dikic, is among the 20 people arrested.
As a result, Montenegro’s interior minister Goran Danilovic has warned people to stay indoors instead of celebrating in the streets after parliamentary election results are announced.
Goran Danilovic said “I appeal to all political parties who are taking part in the election, whoever has a reason to celebrate, to stay at home with their families.”
There have been fears that violence could erupt on the streets of Podgorica, the capital, between opposition and government supporters after the results of the vote are announced. The latest developments confirm fears that this right race could be the most important election in a quarter of a century in the tiny Balkan country.
