Belgrade, Serbia | Tirana Echo – Serbian President Tomislav Nikolichas announced his withdrawal from the presidential race supporting the candidacy of PM Aleksandar Vucic instead.

Nikolic made the announcement after a meeting with PM Vucic, where they allegedly agreed that Serbia’s future needs a joint strategy of leadership for the good of the country.

The official statement from the Serbian government said after the meeting that  “the President and the Prime Minister fully agree that Serbia is facing serious challenges, which require a joint and comprehensive response from the state leadership. The unity of all state officials in resolving regional problems and avoiding a widest scale crisis are priority tasks of both President Nikolic and Prime Minister Vucic. “

The announcement follows several days of rumors of a ‘reconciliation’ between Vucic and Nikolic and gives PM Vucic a huge push ahead in its bid to become Serbia’s next President.

It is yet unclear who will be able to seriously challenge Vucic but Former Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic has already declared his intentions to be the opposition’s main candidate to fight for the top position.

Presidential elections in Serbia are expected to be held on 30 April 2017, with a possible second round on 14 May.
