Tirana, March 16 (Tirana Echo) – The new General prosecutor of Albania Arta Marku has spoken for the first time since her appointment last December, saying the entire structure of Albania’s justice system has degraded.

Speaking to Vizion Plus TV in Tirana, Marku said that during her 15 years of service in Albania, she has witnessed the gradual degradation of the justice legal system in the small corrupt Balkan country.

Asked if the justice system is corrupt, she responded that “I have my own perception over the justice system and what I can tell you is that I have seen it degrade. It is painful to admit but this is how I have seen it. Both the prosecutors and courts have not done their job, and the public opinion has seen and felt such a degradation”.

Albania is under heavy pressure from the European Union and the United States to advance with the total reformation of its justice system. The small Balkan country is currently vetting its judges and prosecutors, process which will  pave the way for the special anti corruption prosecutor to start its mission.

The country is fuelled by constant speculation of high level  arrests expected to take place soon, however, sceptics see the current reform as a theatrical show which aims to tick the boxes rather than clean up the country’s highly corrupt political and justice ranks.
