Israeli private detective risks 10 years in prison for bringing wiretapping device into Albania

Tirana, Albania | Tirana Echo – The Albanian police have started proceedings for Yoram Frig, a private Israeli detective who was arrested in Tirana’s International Airport last week with an illegal tapping device found on his luggage.

Frig stands accused on 4 counts by the Economic Anti Crime Branch which has said the 50 year old of “trafficking illegal devices” into Albania.

While the recording device was seized in Tirana’s international airport last week, the police have not said how it entered the country. The Albanian authorities have seized the device for further controls to determine what it has been used for in the Albanian territory.

According to Albania’s legislation, the usage of tapping devices on its territory is prohibited by law, unless it is properly authorizes by state authorities.

Article 171 of the Penal Code of Albania prohibits the import, export or transiting of such devices and anyone caught transporting it risks up to 10 years in prison.

A statement on Friday by the Israeli Foreign Ministry said the Israeli citizen, a 51-year-old man identified as F.Y., was stopped with bugging equipment at the Rinas International Airport Mother Teresa before leaving the country.

The Israeli suspect was released after being questioned at the presence of a legal interpreter. His passport was confiscated and he is unable to leave Albania.

The suspect, who holds shares in the Cyprus-based company Faturenet Holding Corp, is related to the Panama Papers, a massive leak of millions of documents that exposed corruption and crime on a global scale. This was the suspect’s fourth visit to Albania.
