Tirana, Albania | July 24 (Tirana Echo) – The number of casualties and death toll from road accidents in Albania has fallen compared to the same period last year.

Latest data published by Albania’s official statistics body INSTAT indicate an 11,5 % fall in casualty numbers with a total of 1066 during the first half of 2018.

Overall there are 7 deaths less than the same period last year while monthly figures for June show an increase of 8 deaths more than the same month last year.

While the number of casualties has increased, the total number of accidents for June 2018 were 142 accidents, down from 185 of the same month last year, showing a decrease of 23,2 %.

Albania is one of the riskiest countries in Europe for driving, suffering from poor infrastructural conditions, lack of adequate road signs as well as from a poor driving and pedestrian culture inherited from its communist past when people were banned from driving.

According to the latest WHO data published in 2017 Road Traffic Accidents Deaths in Albania reached 395 or 2.04% of total deaths. The age adjusted Death Rate is 12.32 per 100,000 of population ranks Albania #114 in the world.
