Albania’s opposition chief Basha defies US Embassy – says Washington supports his opposition demands

Tirana, Albania | Tirana Echo – Albania’s Democratic Party chair Lulzim Basha has said today there will be no withdrawal from the opposition’s demands for a technical government, adding that Washington fully supports their cause, in clear defiance to US Embassy statements that the US does not support parliamentary boycott.

DP and the entire Albanian people have got full support from Washington. There will be no withdrawal until victory”, declared Basha this morning in front of his daily militants at the protest tent in Tirana.

Basha’s statements come a day after the US Embassy in Tirana said that the US does not support the parliamentary boycott and the blocking of elections in Albania.

The United States support free and fair elections, the decriminalization process and the fight against narcotics, but such matters should not be used as reasons to boycott parliament, to block elections or to delay the implementation of justice reform. We encourage dialogue between government and opposition to solve these issues”- said a statement from a spokesperson of the US Embassy in Albania.

Last night, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said that “the Democratic Party should forget about the technical government or the postponement of elections”, promising that elections would go ahead as planned with or without the opposition in June.

However, DP chair Lulzim Basha was firm in his speech this morning.

We are here to guarantee the Albanian people and our international friends on our determination to implement to the end the constitutional pact of 22 July. The path which you have chosen now for over 38 days, is the path I have sworn to defend until victory – and that is the path of resistence,” – said Basha to his Monday morning crowd in Tirana’s main boulevard.

The opposition democrats and other parties have been protesting for 38 days in front of the PM office demanding Rama’s resignation and the formation of a new technical government which will guarantee free and fair elections in June 18th.

The democrats are currently boycotting parliament, have removed themselves from electoral registers and have warned that if their two main demands are not met, there will be no elections in Albania.
