Tirana, Albania | Tirana Echo – The Albanian Parliament will gather this evening to vote on the new names to fill the ‘Vetting’ structures, despite the boycott of the opposition parties.

The ‘Vetting’ law which is to scan all judges and prosecutors of Albania requires the creation of an ad-hoc committee with equal representation from majority and opposition.

However, with the opposition in parliamentary boycott the creation of such committee is impossible unless individual MPs break the boycott and join the ranks of the majority.

Analysts close to the Socialist Party have hinted that the opposition places could be filled by the PDIU party which despite its alliance with the socialists in Government are technically still registered as an opposition group since 2013.

Earlier today, DP Parliamentary Group chair Edi Paloka said the Prime Minister is seeking to nominate and unilaterally pick and choose which party is in opposition.

Our position is very clear. We are not interested about what happens in Parliament tonight. If they want justice reform and Vetting, the PM should resign, we create a technical government and take the country towards free and fair elections” – said Paloka.

Albanian Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta has called an extraordinary session tonight at 18:00 to assess and vote on the establishment of the ad-hoc committee which is to approve the final names for the vetting process. Political groups have until 16:00 to put forward their proposals for the ad-hoc committee while a simple majority vote is needed for the committee to be set up.

The European Union has asked Albania to start implementing its much needed reform of the highly corrupt justice system before it can open accession talks for EU membership later this year.
