Albanian opposition parties declare official boycott of local and general elections

Tirana, Albania | Tirana Echo – The Albanian opposition parties announced on Monday to officially boycott the local elections in a western city, Kavaja and will hold a larger national protest on May 7.

The Democratic Party which is the main Albanian opposition party, declared today that they are going to boycott not only the local election which will be held on May 7 in Kavaja, but also the general parliamentary elections on the 18th of June.

Leader of Albanian Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha declared that ‘the Democratic Party is not going to register in the Central Election Commission, unless the current government accepts to create a caretaker government and collaborate with other parties‘.

Albanian opposition parties have been boycotting parliament for more than a month leading the country into a political crisis while pressure mounts on PM Rama to resign.

Rama’s junior ally Ilir Meta who serves as Speaker of Parliament has called for dialogue and has conditioned the continuation of his governing coalition with Rama’s socialists on the reformatting of the government into a more trustworthy team of ministers accepted by the opposition.

Meta has also called for free and fair elections and has expressed concerns on drug cultivation and trafficking which has tripled in the past two years.

April counts three important electoral deadlines for Albania. Tonight is the last deadline for political parties to register of election participation, amid joint opposition boycott of the process.

By April 19th pre-electoral coalitions have to be registered at the Central Elections Commission while by the end of the month all party lists of candidates running for parliament have to be officially registered.
