Tirana, Albania | Tirana Echo – The Albanian General Prosecutor has demanded the removal of the mandate of socialist MP Armando Prenga  while asking for a penal investigation on the Central Elections Commission.

Referring to the so called ‘Decriminalization’ law, the Prosecutor’s office argues that Armando Prenga has not fulfilled his legal obligations to declare any past criminal activities in the decriminalization form, which all public officials are obliged to fill in.

According to the Prosecutor’s statement, Prenga has failed to declare a previous court verdict of falsification of documents as well as his criminal activity in Italy which range from falsifying documents, theft and using false identity, all confirmed by Italian authorities.

The GP Office has also started investigating the Central Elections Commission of Albania (CEC) for failing to abide by its obligations during the ‘decriminalization’ process, noting several shortcomings in handling the administration of documents as well as in its cooperation with the Prosecutor.

The PG said yesterday that “every state institution or individual, public or private, is obliged to cooperate with competent authorities, in verifying information, facts and circumstances declared by citizens” covered by the ‘decriminalization’ law.

The General Prosecutor statement comes as several MP names are circulating in local Albanian media of being the ‘next’ victims of the decriminalization process, aiming to clean up Albanian politics, which has been endorsed by the European Union and the United States.

So far, the law has caused two MPs and the Mayor of Kavaja to lose their mandates.
