Albanian Population up in 16 years despite aging trend

Tirana, Albania | Tirana Echo – The population of Albania grew for the first time since 2001 to 2.88 million according to Albanian Statistics Institute INSTAT.

The total number of people living in Albania went up to 2. 876.591 in January 2017 compared to 2.875.592 a year earlier. According to INSTAT 32 thousand babies were born in 2016 while the country accounts 21 thousand deaths. The positive natural growth of the population is recorded at 11 thousand people. Meanwhile net migration (the difference between immigrants and emigrants) has increased although it continues to remain on the negative side. People leaving Albania have decreased from 41 thousand to 33 thousand while those coming back to the country have gone up from 21 thousand to 23 thousand.

The average age of the country has grown from 34 years old in 2015 to 35 in 2016. Tirana ( 30%), Fieri (11%), Durrës (10%) and Elbasan (10%), carry the biggest share of the total population of Albania.

Capital city Tirana continues to boast the youngest population in the country.
