Albania to benefit 36m Euros for the Tirana-Durrës-International Airport Railway

London, 16 Dec 2016 (Tirana Echo) – Albania will get 36m euros from the European Commission for the construction of the Tirana-Durres Railway as well as its branch to Albania’s ‘Mother Teresa’ International Airport, said the Ministry of Integration of Albania.

The railway project was one of 3 regional projects approved for Albania, with the two others focusing on technical assistance on the ring road of Tirana as well as the Vora-Hani i Hotit Railway line which connects Tirana with Albania’s northern border point with Montenegro.

The total cost of the Tirana-Durres railway will be 90m euros, as part of the National Package of Strategic Projects of Albania which the Western Balkans Investment Fund (WBIF) has been supporting. The railway will connect Albania’s capital Tirana to the country’s biggest Adriatic Port of Durres as well as provide both cities with a link to the International Airport of ‘Mother Teresa’.

The 36m euros granted towards the project is seen as an important development for the Balkan country as it will reconstruct an important artery of Albania’s decayed railway network.

This link is an important part of the Adriatic-Ionian regional corridor  which will strengthen regional connectivity and will help reinforce the links between South East European countries with Albania being one of the poorest in terms of infrastructural connectivity.
